October 31, 2001 - Happy Halloween!

Time for another annual update! No news as usual, but it's the fourth anniversary of this site, so what the hell. The files haven't been available since cdrom.com stopped hosting the PlanetQuake archives, but if you want any of them, just drop me a line and I'll email them to you.

Happy Halloween,
EvilTwin

December 20, 2000

Damn, I haven't updated this thing in ages. Not much going on though. I only stopped by today because I saw a link to the site in an interview with Mark Surfas about GameSpy Industries' acquisition of Mplayer. So it's just one of those days when your free web host buys out your employer, but I figured I'd post an update anyway. ;)

In other news, now that Team Arena is out, I may finally take a stab at Get Rich Quake 3. I never bothered making a version for Quake 3: Arena, mostly because the levels are so small that there wouldn't be enough good hiding places for cashboxes, but the larger levels in Team Arena could be fun.

I've been playing a lot of Half-Life: Team Fortress Classic recently. Some of my friends and I run the "Overlord's Dedicated Linux #1" server at 206.233.214.188:27015. Feel free to join in if you're in the mood.

Peace in the Middle East,
EvilTwin

January 18, 2000 - 1:00 AM

The guy who actually visited this site dropped me a line to point out that it's "next year" so I can update the page now. As usual, I have nothing to say, which is usually why I don't update the page most of the time, but what the hell, any site that's updated as infrequently as this one can use a pointless update now and then, and maybe a run-on sentence as well.

I saw the Kids in the Hall at the Warfield in San Francisco last night. Good stuff. Here's a choice quote from the show:

"The last thing a homosexual with a drug record needs is a MUSLIM DOG."

Till next time...

October 31, 1999 - Happy Halloween!

This site is two years old today. Yes, two whole years of mediocre web design and sporadic news. Time for an update:

Mystery Project Revealed:
All three of you who've visited this site have probably seen me use the "Mystery Project" as an excuse for not working on mods. The Mystery Project was a Linux port of the Unreal server. Back when Unreal was released, part of my job at Mplayer.com was to port the Unreal server to Solaris so people could start their own games on the Mplayer servers. It turned out that porting Unreal to unix was a royal pain in the ass, and the project got canned because it was taking too long. I was pretty close to getting it working though, so I decided to switch over to Linux and finish it in my spare time. That was going pretty well, but then Windoze corrupted my Linux partition and I lost all the work that I'd done since the Solaris version.

After that setback, I took some time to finish up Get Rich Quake 2, which was released one year ago today. For a while, I was working on bug fixes and updating this site fairly regularly, but last December I saw a post from Tim Sweeney on the Unreal Technology page, where he mentioned that Brandon Reinhart and Jack Porter were talking about working on a Linux server. I thought, "Hey, I've almost got one of those," so I offered to bring my code up to date and hand it off to them. At least that would keep all my work from going to waste. Around that time, Epic decided to develop their upcoming "botpack" into a full stand-alone game, and as they concentrated on Unreal Tournament, I had more time to mess with my Linux server.

In April, I got it working. It had a few bugs, and it would crash during botmatches, but I could finally connect to a Linux server and blow shit up. :) The next step was to bring the code up to date. I ported the 224v Core library, then Brandon was ready to take over. He got the UT server working very quickly, then went on to port the client, so the game's going to ship with Linux support right out of the box. Kick ass.

Smaq:
More than a year ago, I threw together a mod for Beatdown XV, but we never got around to playing it. It's been sitting on my hard drive ever since, so as long as I'm actually updating the site, I may as well release it. It's called Smaq, and it goes a little something like this:

The basic idea:
This mod allows plug-in smack-talk sounds for players to yell when they spawn, frag someone, etc. Players can choose different sets of sounds for different personalities. Sounds can be added, removed, or changed via config files.

Gameplay:
It's like rocket arena with no waiting in line. You start fully loaded, and are healed and re-equipped immediately when you get a frag. Unlike RA, however, this mod is completely unfair, thanks to the following ludicrous powerup...

The Can of Whup-ass:
The Can appears every few minutes when somebody (or some body) gets gibbed. The Can of Whup-ass will make you phat. The effect lasts for 20 seconds. If you fail to whup-ass during this time, you will explode.

There ya go. Nothing ground-breaking, but it's fun. There are two cheesy sound sets included. The voice-configuration system could be better, since it doesn't support auto-downloading of new sounds. I thought it would be cool to use standard config files to specify the sounds rather than use my own file format, but it didn't work as well as I would have liked. I suppose I could take a stab at fixing it if there's any interest. Anyway, you can score Smaq over at the files page.

Get Rich Quake 2:
I've finally released version 1.2 of Get Rich Quake 2, with the following changes since version 1.1:

* Fixed grapple rebound bug.
* Added bfcoin setting to replace BFG10K with a $5 coin.
* Added coinpowerups setting to replace quad/pent with $5/$10 coins.

Monster Match:
In the spirit of Halloween, I've released a small tune-up for Monster Match. Now you can use your +jump key to fly upward as a scrag, so you don't need to have a separate +moveup key. I also put the progs.dat file in the client distribution, so you only need one zip file. The source code is still available separately. Check it.

Wow, how was that for a fat update? I guess I'll see ya next year! ;)

Happy Canada Day, eh?

April 22, 1999

I stopped by Flamethrower's site today to check up on game industry dirt, and found a mention of my own Get Rich Quake. Cool :) Looks like someone recommended it when he asked about good free-for-all Quake mods. Whoever it was, thanks for p1mping Get Rich Quake! (Hmm, maybe I should make a British version with pounds instead of dollars...)

In other news, Mystery Project has dragged on and on, eating up all the time I'd normally spend on mods and stuff. On the bright side, it is nearing completion, so hopefully I'll have some more free time soon. I've gotten several emails about Monster Match recently, which is kinda surprising...

I think I'll make one more update to Monster Match to clean up a few things:
1) As a scrag, you can only strafe upwards with +moveup. I'll try to fix it so that +jump works too, since that's more convenient. I remember I used to be able to do both with one command. I'm not sure what changed.
2) On some maps, such as e1m1 and dm3, the shambler mask (which replaces the rocket launcher) shows up in an enclosed area where a shambler is too large to escape. I originally wanted to keep things consistent so that you could expect a shambler mask wherever a rocket launcher would be, but now I think it would be better to switch things around to make sure shamblers have enough room. I'll probably go through the Quake levels and decide which ones should use the standard settings and which ones should be customized.
3) I'll combine the Monster Match client and server files into a single download, since Monster Match can be played as a single-player game.

As for the timing, here's my schedule:
2) Finish Mystery Project.
3) Finish Get Rich Quake 2 update.
4) Monster Match update.
5) New website design.
6) Hell freezes over.

Oh yeah:
1) BEATDOWN! ROCK!

(You HAVE seen the swanky Beatdown 18 shockwave intro, haven't you?)

February 14, 1999

Someone just told me I should update the page. Fine, but since I'm at WORK today, alone with my computer and three Nine Inch Nails CD's, I've only got one thing to say:

Fuck Valentines Day.

Love,
EvilTwin

January 7, 1999

Still no progress on the next version of Get Rich Quake 2. Mystery Project has all my free time booked up through the end of the month. In other news, I got an email from a member of the Rob the Strogg team. They didn't know about Get Rich Quake when designing RTS, so if you read the news on November 11th, don't get the idea that they were trying to rip me off or anything. Rob the Strogg has some great features, especially if you like teamplay. Check it out.

- EvilTwin

December 16, 1998

The "other project" that delayed GRQ2 for so long has fired up again, so the next version probably won't be out soon. I may just release an intermediate version to fix the grapple rebound bug, but I don't think I'll have enough free time to add any other features. (I ran into some unexpected complications with the new options I wanted to add.)

Anyway, happy holidays to everyone! I'll try to make some noise about the next version of GRQ2 early next year, and hopefully it'll get easier to find other players online.

- EvilTwin

November 24, 1998

I think I've finally recovered from the Beatdown last weekend. ROCK! I went to watch the PGL finals the weekend before that, so I haven't had much time to wrap up the next version of Get Rich Quake 2. Sorry for all the delays. I do have the grapple bounce problem fixed though, and there are only a few things left to do before the new version is ready.

- EvilTwin

November 11, 1998

One of my coworkers came across the new Rob the Strogg mod. It's really well done, with custom maps, new weapons, new powerups, and a curious similarity to Get Rich Quake 2. The teamplay aspect looks really strong, with up to three teams of humans stealing gems from the Strogg and from each other in a struggle to be the highest bidder for the last flight off the planet.
From the docs:

"Deathmatch mode is a mega free for all, the name of the game is to be the one with the most gems and the end of the game. Careful though, if you get shot your gonna loose all those gems to your foes."

Hey, that sounds kinda fun. ;)

Seriously, I don't have any problems with another "get rich" mod being released, the only complaint I have is this little claim in the "Features" section:

Game features:
• ...
• Totally new gameplay idea
• ...

As if.

November 10, 1998

My new drive install fest is almost over, so there's a good chance that I'll be able to wrap up Get Rich Quake 1.2 this weekend.

- EvilTwin

November 9, 1998

I installed a new hard drive this weekend, so I had too much reinstalling to do to work on Get Rich Quake 2. I'm not quite done yet, but I think things will be back to normal pretty soon. On the bright side, I now have more than enough space for a nice roomy linux partition. :)

Cool - almost 1000 hits since Halloween. I'll put the counter up top for a bit so you can see if you're the lucky 1000th visitor.

- EvilTwin

November 6, 1998

Not much going on today, but I've been updating the page every day for almost a whole week now, so I may as well keep going. I'm not sure when the next version of Get Rich Quake 2 will be ready. I really don't have much work to do on it, but I'm going to replace one of my hard drives and it may take me a while to get back up and running. When the new version is ready, I'll try to do some p1mping and see if I can get more people to check it out.

- EvilTwin

November 5, 1998

In the next version of Get Rich Quake 2, a lone player's score will be cleared when a second player joins the game, so the game will begin fairly.

I got a chance to play a little yesterday, but it's clear that I've got some more p1mping to do to get people to try it out. When I'm at work, I have GameSpy monitor the servers and let me know when people join. I jump in when I can, but mostly I just have to watch them come and go without getting a game going. If you want to get in a game of Get Rich Quake 2, here's what I recommend:

1) Join a server even if it's empty, and wait around for a bit. Use the opportunity to get familiar with the map and find good hiding places for your cashbox.
2) If you're checking your email or browsing the web, get GameSpy to monitor the servers for you and let you know when a game begins.

Finding GRQ opponents with GameSpy:
1) Select all GRQ servers. (Switch to your GRQ tab and hit CTRL-A.)
2) Click the "busy server redial" button. (The one with the little phone.)
3) Set it to take action when your filtering condition is met.
4) Switch from "General" to "Filtering," then click "Filter Wizard."
5) Check "Responded to a refresh request" and "are not empty."
6) Click the two ok buttons.
7) GameSpy will notify you when you've got an opponent.

Answer from yesterday: Yes, it was the father unit.

- EvilTwin

November 4, 1998

Wh00p! There are now two public Get Rich Quake 2 servers available. Thanks to RaVeN of the Viking Mod team for setting up the new one at quake2.isoc.net:27925.

With two whole servers to choose from, why not download the GameSpy tab from Andrew "Qwiff" Howse, whom I accidentally called "Keith" yesterday, thinking that the email account was his when in fact it belongs to one of his parental units. Guess which parental unit for two bonus points (answer tomorrow.)

- EvilTwin

November 3, 1998

A GameSpy tab for Get Rich Quake 2 is now available in the file section, thanks to Andrew "Qwiff" Howse.

Election day fun: Straight from the California Votor Information Guide comes one of the stupidest quotes ever printed in all-capital letters:
"IF HORSEMEAT IS OUTLAWED, ONLY OUTLAWS WILL EAT HORSEMEAT!"
Uh... YEAH, and if bank robbery is outlawed, only outlaws will rob banks.

UPDATE: Please don't get the idea that Californians have nothing better to do than worry about horsemeat legislation. We also worry about suntans, nose jobs, and finding gnarly waves, dude. ;)

- EvilTwin

November 2, 1998

I got into a couple good games of Get Rich Quake 2 tonight :) No new bugs surfaced, so the mod is looking pretty stable. There are a few issues I want to address though, so here's what I'm planning for the next patch:
- Fix annoying grapple bounce behavior.
- Add option to replace BFG with a BFCoin, as suggested by Brian Kelly (the p1mp daddy server operator.)
- Replace quad and pent with coins when powerups are disabled.

I'll try to get linux and solaris ports out too. That'll probably happen either this weekend or next - Windoze recently corrupted my linux partition and I need to reinstall.

Man, all this mod business seems to be getting to me... Last night, I actually dreamed about getting a bug report from a server operator!

- EvilTwin

November 1, 1998 - UPDATE

I've just uploaded a new version of Get Rich Quake 2 to fix the offhand grapple bug. I also fixed a nasty drill bug spotted by David "DO97" Orozco.

Server operators: Get Rich Quake 2 has MOTD support and Zbot detection built in, so don't let that stop you from trying it out ;)

Zen and the Art of Modification Maintenance:
Hmmm, lots of one's today... It's 11/1, it's one year and one day after this site was launched, and all of the mods are now at version 1.1. Can't you just, like, FEEL the cosmic synergy? =p

- EvilTwin

November 1, 1998

There's a Get Rich Quake 2 server running at quake2.alienwebshop.com:27911. Thanks to Brian Kelly for setting it up. I also want to thank Oscar "HANGxUPS" Rondon for Get Rich Quake 2's console background and menu graphics. Rock :)

I found a pretty serious bug in GRQ2 last night, so it looks like I'll have to release a patch sooner than I expected. The bug is related to the offhand grappling hook, so you can avoid it by setting offhand to 0 and restarting the game. I'll try to get the patch out later today.

- EvilTwin

October 31, 1998 - Happy Halloween!

Exactly one year ago today, this site was opened with two new mods - Monster Match and Get Rich Quake. What better way to celebrate the anniversary than with the release of

Get Rich Quake 2

Enjoy. I had to hurry a bit to get it ready for Halloween, so bear with me while I fix up the docs and stuff. Expect a patch soon ;)
- EvilTwin

October 23, 1998

It's almost Halloween, so I cleaned up Monster Match a bit for the occasion:
- Added instructions to the welcome message (it's really simple)
- Made it simpler to switch from a shamber to a knight for those tight spots
- More blood! Oh yeah :)
Get it.

Monster Match was written back before QuakeWorld, so it runs best on a LAN. If you play it over a modem, try using the first-person perspective for better control.

In other news...
Beatdown!!!

Rock.
- EvilTwin

October 9, 1998

I've got some new sound effects to include in Get Rich Quake 2. Most sounds from the original will probably stay, but I don't want the sequel to be an exact clone. I'm still pretty busy with other things, but I hope to be able to work on it soon.

I'm going to Beatdown XV. Rock :)

- EvilTwin

September 23, 1998

Get Rich Quake 2 has been delayed recently due to another project I've been working on, but I'll definitely see it through to completion. I decided not to release a public preview, because I want people to get their first impression from something that looks complete rather than just another mod-in-progress. I haven't been updating the page, since I didn't think anyone would be looking here until GRQ2 is ready, but a few people wrote in recently (thanks, guys!) asking about the status, so there's the skinny.

It was Pirates vs. Vikings in a custom CTF-based teamplay version of Get Rich Quake 2 made just in time for the Beatdown, with the most loot going to the Pirates. Arrrrgh! Thar be more pics available in the Beatdown archives. Rock.

Mod of the Week Wrap-up
Wow, what a cool week. Thanks to Dave 'Fargo' Kosak and the rest of the PlanetQuake staff for rescuing Get Rich Quake from total obscurity, thanks to the administrators of the Pallas Athena, Maxgamer.com, and get-rich-quake- UK servers, and of course thanks to everyone who checked out the mod. I hope you had fun :)

Get Rich Quake II update
I churned out a lot of code in the last few days, and I'm very close to having a good "preview" version of Get Rich Quake II, complete with the grappling hook and antigrav/armored cashbox options.
Now that Get Rich Quake's time as Mod of the Week is up, though, I'm not sure if I should release the preview or wait until I add teamplay and all the bells and whistles I have planned for the full version.
It all comes down to "is anyone going to play it?" If you're at all interested in running Get Rich Quake II on your server, or playing it over your LAN for that matter, just let me know and I'll package up the preview version. Otherwise, I'll plan on a full release this summer.

- EvilTwin

April 22, 1998

A custom GameSpy tab for Get Rich Quake is now available from the GameSpy Tab Library, thanks to Kevin 'Zob the Slayer' Brown.
- EvilTwin

April 21, 1998

Some small updates to the Get Rich Quake files today:
1) Source code is once again included with the server files.
2) The client zip file now includes the current readme file, and the custom console background has been moved outside of the pak file so it'll show up properly in QuakeWorld.

"Mod of the Week, what an odd thing to spring on a person..."
- Fargo

Well, the PlanetQuake staff lit a fire under my butt today. Here I am minding my own business, slacking off on Get Rich Quake II, and they go and tell me that Get Rich Quake is going to be "Mod of the Week." Suddenly, I found myself actually getting around to updating the docs and uploading the latest version of Get Rich Quake - pronto.

So WTF is Get Rich Quake? Basically, you run around picking up cash, kill people :) , take their cash, and hide your cash in a box so the next jerk who frags you can't have it. The person with the most bank at the end wins.

Even if you got your butt kicked all last week in Rocket Arena 2, you've got a good chance to do well in Get Rich Quake. If you can't kill the good people, you can still find their cash. Lose all your money to a quad-whore? Then quit whining and get it back! It only takes a few seconds to go from worst to first in Get Rich Quake. Know every good DM level by heart? Well, try on some of those giant, single-player levels for size. The more dark corners and catacombs, the more great hiding places for your hard-earned cash.

As for Get Rich Quake II, I'll see if I can get a "preview" version out for the weekend - something with all the basic gameplay, but without the bells and whistles like the grappling hook, teamplay, vweap support, and menus. In the mean time, try out Get Rich Quake I, you just might have a good time. (If not, try adding beer :)

Happy fragging!
- EvilTwin

March 27, 1998

I've decided that having a web page at PlanetQuake is actually pretty cool, and that I should update more often even if there isn't anything major going on. After all, if you're looking here then you're probably pretty desperate for reading material ;) Anyway, Get Rich Quake II is coming along nicely. I haven't decided whether to release a bare-bones version or wait until I have full support for the grappling hook and teamplay. New mods don't have much of a chance to make a big splash though, so I'll probably wait until all the pieces are in place.
- EvilTwin

February 22, 1998

Finally, an update: The links on the files page have been fixed. I've had a newer version of Get Rich Quake ready for a while now, but I just haven't gotten around to updating the docs with the new features. Maybe I'll finally get off my butt and post it soon. I've been messing with Quake II a little, and I'll probably make a Quake II version of GRQ once id releases the game DLL source from the point release.
- EvilTwin

November 27, 1997 - Happy Thanksgiving!

Bah! I accidentally distributed an outdated build of the Get Rich Quake server. The "real" version 1.0 is now available. It's Thanksgiving, so thanks to Bastard for pointing out the telltale bug. (Wow, that's two holiday distributions in a row.) The Mplayer servers have had the correct version all along, so there won't be any changes there.
- EvilTwin

November 21, 1997

The file section has been hosed for a few days, but it should be fixed now. Sorry for any inconvenience.

October 31, 1997 - Happy Halloween!

News: The site's up. :)
Thanks to everyone at PlanetQuake for hosting this, and thanks to David 'crt' Wright for putting me in touch with them.
Here's a quick intro to the two mods:

Get Rich Quake:
- Get Rich Quake adds greed to the violence we all love. The objective: get more money than your opponents. Pick it up around the level, or just kill people and take it from them! Don’t want to lose all your money when you get fragged? Then find a good hiding place and stash it in your cashbox. Play in teams, and your teammates can guard your stash while you go out in search of more cash.
- In free for all games, the poorest player is never more than a few seconds away from snagging first place. One well placed rocket, and you can find yourself in a room full of money. One poorly placed cashbox, and your reign is over. Easy come, easy go. It's a whole lot of hectic, chaotic fun.
- Team games offer great opportunities for strategy. How will you and your team keep your money safe? Drop all your cashboxes in a room and guard it? Scatter your cashboxes in dark corners around the level? Maybe guard some empty cashboxes while your stash lies safely in the perfect hiding place? One thing's for sure: if you don't work well as a team, you'll be headed straight for the poor house.

Monster Match:
- In Monster Match, players compete as Quake monsters rather than Quake players. Each player enters the game as a knight armed with a sword. The weapons in Quake have been replaced by masks representing different monsters. When picked up, a mask transforms the player into the corresponding monster. The transformation lasts for 60 seconds, after which the evil curse of the mask wears off and the player changes back into a knight. Monster Match features an (optional) over-the-shoulder view to show players their status as they transform, move, and attack.
- Monster Match is stricly monster vs. monster - no Quake soldiers with rocket launchers to spoil the fun of a quad-packin' Zombie as he transforms his opponents into his undead brethren.
- You can play Monster Match single-player! It's a great way to relieve stress, and it's guaranteed to be somewhat amusing for at least 10 minutes! ;)

Well, enough talk. Go download 'em.
